Association Update

The State Emergency Service Association of NSW is pleased to provide members with a broad update on recent governance milestones and key Association activity.

New Constitution Adopted at Special General Meeting

Members recently participated in a Special General Meeting convened to consider the adoption of a new Constitution for the Association. The resolution was carried, and the Constitution is now formally adopted and in force.

This milestone marks an important step in the Association’s transition from establishment into full operation. The updated Constitution provides a clear, contemporary governance framework that strengthens transparency, representation, and accountability, while ensuring the Association remains fit for purpose as it continues to grow.

The Constitution will be lodged with NSW Fair Trading within the statutory timeframe.

Key Highlights of the New Constitution

The amendments adopted by members were informed directly by member feedback and operational experience since incorporation.

Key changes include:

  • Stronger Committee Representation
Two new Representative Committee Member positions have been added:

    • one Volunteer Representative Committee Member, and

    • one Staff Representative Committee Member.

These roles ensure clearer, dedicated representation for both volunteers and staff at the Committee level.

  • Updated State Headquarters Area Representation
Area Representative arrangements for State Headquarters have been amended, with representation now aligned to directorates rather than business units, improving clarity and alignment with current structures.

  • Simplified Area Representative Nominations and Elections
The nomination and election processes for Area Representatives have been streamlined to strike the right balance between effective administration and sound governance, reducing unnecessary complexity while maintaining transparency and integrity.

  • Minor and Administrative Amendments
A range of minor amendments were also made to improve clarity, consistency, and operation across the Constitution, taking the opportunity to refine the governing document while it was formally under review.

Together, these changes demonstrate that the Association is actively listening to members, regularly reviewing its governance arrangements, and responding constructively to feedback. They also reflect the rapid maturation of the Association in the short period since incorporation in September 2025.

Quarterly Engagement with the Commissioner

As part of regular engagement, the President recently met with the Commissioner for a quarterly meeting. The relationship between the State Emergency Service Association of NSW and NSW SES remains strong and constructive.

The Service is currently finalising responses to the matters raised in Bulletin 01/2025. The Association looks forward to receiving these outcomes and will provide members with a further update once they are available.

Acknowledgement of Service – Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz

The Association formally acknowledges and thanks Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz for her outstanding leadership and contribution to NSW SES in her role as Deputy Commissioner Operations.

Debbie’s commitment to the Service, operational leadership, and dedication to members have left a lasting impact. As she departs to commence her new role as Commissioner of the Queensland Human Rights Commission, the Association wishes her every success. She will be greatly missed by the NSW SES community.

Bondi Terror Attack – Member Support and Thanks

Following the tragic Bondi terror attack, the Association has reached out to Unit Commanders from units that attended the incident, as well as those that provided local coverage.

Our hearts are with all those impacted by this devastating event, including the family, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives, as well as the two police officers who were injured in the line of duty.

We thank all NSW SES members involved for their professionalism, commitment, and service during an exceptionally difficult incident. Your commitment reflects the very best of the NSW SES and the broader emergency service community.

The Association also reminds members that support is always available. NSW SES members can access assistance through:

  • the Peer Support Program, and

  • the Member Assistance Program.

Details on how to access these services are available here:

Seeking support is a sign of strength, and members are encouraged to reach out if they need assistance, whether immediately or in the weeks and months ahead.
